A Plain-English Tour of Your Federal Benefits
In the "Hour of Power" briefing, our federal benefits educators explain key federal benefit concepts, rules, and considerations. The information is general education and does not promise a particular financial outcome.
FEGLI Life Insurance
- How Basic, Option A, B & C actually work
- What happens to your coverage at retirement
- The most common FEGLI mistakes federal employees make
- How to calculate if you're over- or under-insured
FEGLI Option B costs generally increase with age, which can surprise employees later in their career.
TSP Retirement
- How the G, C, S, I and L funds actually differ
- How to optimize contributions for your timeline
- The FERS supplement: who gets it and when it stops
- What to do with your TSP when you retire
Many federal employees may not fully understand how their TSP fund choices affect long-term growth.
FEHB Health Insurance
- How to actually compare FEHB plans (not just the premium)
- Open season tips to lower your monthly cost
- FEHB + Medicare coordination explained clearly
- TRICARE for retired federal workers with military service
FEHB plan comparisons should consider more than just the monthly premium.
Are You Making These Mistakes?
Ten costly missteps we see federal employees make again and again, and exactly how to avoid each one.
Misunderstanding FEGLI costs
Taking a Social Security bridge
Underestimating survivor benefits
Tapping your TSP too early
Miscalculating sick leave credit
Forgetting Medicare Part B
Overlooking state taxes
Ignoring inflation
Incorrect beneficiary designations
Failing to plan for taxes
You're a Federal Employee Who Deserves Clear Answers
- You've been paying into FEGLI for years but can't explain what you'd leave your family
- You set up your TSP when you were hired and haven't touched it since
- You pick the same FEHB plan every open season because comparing feels overwhelming
- You're within 5–10 years of retirement and want to make sure you're on track
- You're tired of HR giving vague answers and want a straight explanation

Mario Roker
President, Federal Benefits Exchange
Mario Roker is President of Federal Benefits Exchange, where his focus is the health and life insurance side of the federal benefits picture: FEHB plan decisions, how that coverage interacts with Medicare Part B at 65, and what FEGLI really costs as its age-based premiums step up. It's the half of federal benefits that gets the least attention and carries some of the largest long-term costs.
He brings more than 15 years in health and life insurance across group benefits and senior health coverage, and also leads Insurance Masters LLC. Much of that work is Affordable Care Act compliance: reading dense federal regulation closely enough to tell people what it actually means for them, which is the same discipline federal benefit rules demand. His aim is to take the jargon out of coverage decisions so federal employees can see their options plainly before they commit.
Federal Employee Benefits Advocates LLC (FEBA) is not affiliated with the company offering these services. FEBA is separately owned. It partners with financial services representatives and their companies to provide employee benefits briefings and training programs to Federal agencies and their employees throughout the United States and the world.
